Road safety is a particular concern of the Traffic Directorate. The prevention of traffic accidents is seen as a task for society as a whole. In addition to the areas of traffic monitoring (control and sanctions), the areas of traffic accident prevention and public relations work are of great importance.
The Traffic Directorate is structured as follows:
Traffic Service
The employees of the Traffic Service are responsible for traffic monitoring and combating the main causes of accidents. The motorcycle group with four full-time motorcyclists is also part of the traffic service.
The checks and monitoring by the traffic service are carried out throughout the city, focusing on accident-prone sections, areas requiring protection and known "speeding routes".
The inspection, acceptance and escort of large and heavy goods vehicles, the technical inspection of trucks and vans, including the inspection of social regulations, also fall within its remit.
In addition, the traffic service deploys its own bicycle patrol on an ad hoc basis.
The traffic accident prevention and the victim protection are affiliated with the traffic service. Extensive prevention measures are offered here for all road users.
Traffic Department
The Traffic Department deals with all traffic accidents that occur in the Polizeipräsidium Hamm area of responsibility. The spectrum ranges from simple "fender benders" to serious and very serious accidents with sometimes fatal consequences. All hit-and-run accidents are also processed here.
In addition, all criminal offenses with an impact on road safety and all traffic offences fall within the remit of the traffic commissioner's office.
